Travellers' diarrhoea
Traveler’s diarrhoea is an infection of the stomach and intestine that causes loose, watery stools in those travelling. It is the most common illness that occurs to travellers worldwide, although it predominantly happens in Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Mexico, and Central and South America. Essentially, TD is caused by ingested contaminated water or food containing bacteria, viruses, or parasites. Poor sanitation, lack of refrigeration, unsafe water, and poor food handling practices are among the risk factors for acquiring the disease.
The symptoms Traveler's diarrhoea of include:
Stools that are unformed, Abdominal cramps, Nausea, Fever, Headache, Bloating, and
Bloody diarrhoea.
If you contract TD, you should attempt to diagnose it while you are travelling and take steps
in managing it.
This includes:
- Hydration: Replace lost body fluids
- Medication: Take loperamide to relieve symptoms. Loperamide appears more effective than bismuth subsalicylate and is taken by adults and children over 12 years.
